"You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are." Mr. Rogers
That's how this business came to be and I'm thrilled to share my passion for TOTEM with all of you.
I get asked a lot about the story behind the name TOTEM. By its very definition, a totem is a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, lineage or tribe.* While totems have been used by many cultures around the world and throughout time, I've personally had an affinity for the Native or First American culture and its traditions since I was a child. Maybe it's inspired from my many trips to the Southwest or perhaps it started when I used to marvel at a picture of my great, great grandmother that hung on the wall of my Mamaw & Grandaddy's's house. She was a full-blooded Cherokee with high cheek bones, strong brows and soulful dark eyes. Her wild woman spirit lives on in all the generations that have come after her, including me and my three daughters, and I know that would make her smile. I'd like to think that maybe she's smiling down from the heavens on us now.
But regardless of where the inspiration came from, I do believe totems are the manifestations of the things we hold sacred and dear.
So what's my TOTEM? As Rumi so eloquently stated, "what you seek is seeking you." My totem changes moment to moment like my favorite book, coffee shop or comfy pair of jeans. God, family & Mother Earth are always on the top of the list, but the moments are always changing and so am I.
